FROM LOCAL LANES TO THE NATIONAL STAGE: SUPPORTING YOUNG BIATHLON TALENT
With support from The Hope Fund, Sisanda and Layla were able to represent KwaZulu-Natal at the South African Biathlon Championships.

The Hope Fund had the privilege of supporting two inspiring young athletes, Sisanda and Layla, as they took an important step in their sporting journey. Their dedication, discipline, and determination reflect the very values that guide our work, creating opportunities where potential meets support.
Sisanda and Layla qualified to compete at the South African Biathlon Championships, which took place in Stellenbosch from 31st March to 1st April 2023. Biathlon, which combines a 400m run and a 50m freestyle swim for the 11-and-under age group, demands both physical endurance and mental focus. It is a sport that teaches resilience, balance, and commitment from a young age.
Their road to the national stage was shaped by hard work and consistency. To qualify, the girls participated in a series of Biathlon League meetings, steadily improving their performance. Their efforts were rewarded at the KZN Biathlon Championships, where Sisanda placed 5th and Layla placed 9th. These results earned them selection to represent KwaZulu-Natal at the national championships.
What makes their journey even more inspiring is that both girls are currently ranked among the top 10 biathlon athletes in South Africa for their age group this season, a clear reflection of their talent and perseverance.
Through its support, The Hope Fund assisted in covering the costs associated with their participation, helping to remove financial barriers and allowing the girls to focus fully on competing and growing as athletes. This support was not only about funding a trip, but about investing in confidence, opportunity, and belief.
Sisanda and Layla’s story reminds us that when young people are supported, their potential has room to flourish. The Hope Fund is proud to walk alongside them as they continue to chase their dreams.
