BUILDING SAFE SPACES FOR YOUNG LEARNERS: SIYATHUTHUKA OBANJENI DEVELOPMENT CENTRE
The development of Siyathuthuka Obanjeni Development Centre and the facility upgrades that have improved its learning environment.

Siyathuthuka Obanjeni NPO was established in 2007 to support vulnerable children in the Obanjeni community. After closing during the COVID-19 pandemic, the organisation continued assisting families through food parcel distribution and reopened in July 2021 as the Siyathuthuka Development Centre with a focus on quality early childhood development. The centre currently serves 8 to 12 children aged 3 to 5 in its Grade RRR and RR programmes and provides daily nutritious hot meals. Despite the dedication of staff, the facility required upgrades to ensure a safe, dignified and child friendly learning environment.
Siyathuthuka approached The Hope Fund for assistance in improving the centre’s infrastructure. At the time, the facility relied on a drop toilet, had a damaged roof and ceiling, bare cement floors and walls in need of repainting. The playground equipment also required attention to make the space more inviting and suitable for young children.
With funding support, the center underwent important improvements. A flushing toilet was installed, the roof and ceiling were repaired, new flooring was added and the walls were painted, creating a cleaner and more welcoming indoor environment. The playground equipment was upgraded and repainted, transforming the outdoor area into a safer and more engaging space for play and learning.
These improvements have created a more functional and welcoming space for the children and staff at Siyathuthuka Development Centre. While much progress has been made, ongoing support remains essential to maintain the facility, strengthen programmes and continue providing a safe and nurturing learning environment. Investment in centres like Siyathuthuka plays a vital role in giving young children a strong start in life and supporting the long term wellbeing of the Obanjeni community.
